Niyoti Upadhye

  • I have had the unique opportunity to work with some big banners and stalwart film professionals in the past 20 years. Starting as a production assistant in the early 2000s, I was adopted into the pace of the industry by getting first hand experiences in it’s varied processes.

  • Assisting with production to assisting directors and then associate producing for post production and animation, I found my niche in wardrobe styling where I did some great projects with some leading directors. Not content with styling, I ventured into production design with my partner, Vinay and soon realised that designing spaces and inventing uninvented worlds is my passion. Translating the director’s vision and then visualising and creating an even better world, is what thoroughly excites me. To me, every space is a character and every character has a story to tell. And I try to tell that story by creating a world that speaks for itself. To make the audience, see, feel, hear, and live in this new world, is my purpose. Every project is an opportunity to learn something new. And that keeps me going and wanting to compete with myself. I intrinsically and strongly believe I have an eye for beautiful, unique things, and to share it with the fraternity, my partner and I run a successful prop rental store in Mumbai called The One Props, which I have curated and keep updating as trends change. On this design journey, I have been lucky to have designed some houses for Airbnb and I continue to grab any such opportunities that come my way. I am my happiest self, when designing spaces, be it film or real houses.

  • From stirring atta in troughs to production designing for some of India’s and the world’s most prolific directors is a story spanning experiences in several film and television departments over three decades. I had the good fortune of learning the various aspects of film craft with the help of some of the pioneers of the Indian advertising industry. To them I owe a forever debt of gratitude and thanks because they taught me to never stop learning. In 2010, I pivoted from being a senior producer with one of India’s most famous production houses at the time, into production design along with my partner, Niyoti. Driven by passion, this entry into a different space, was fuelled by the trust put in us by adventurous directors and sympathetic producers. Over the last decade we have been fortunate to have done a myriad of projects, where we have been tested on all fronts. I find my design inspiration in the constant tussle between design and functionality, and in the massive repository of style that nature provides. My profession has taken me to some offbeat places on this planet and my love for culture and history extends lateral insights into my design work. I can speak several Indian and two foreign languages, which allows me to cross thinking barriers quickly and consolidate ideas. I firmly believe that the journey to understanding is only limited by the path of knowledge that you wish to choose.
